This is the End

Often times watching somebody play themselves in a film can be irritating and somewhat awkward as you realise that they try to put on a whole new persona, that just doesn’t work. ‘This Is the End’ is the exception to this. The film stars Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jay Baruchel, Craig Robinson, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride and a multitude of other celebrities. It was released in 2013 and directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

Jay Baruchel has just flown into L.A. to meet up with his best pal Seth Rogen. Jay simply wishes to get high and chill out with Seth, however Seth forces Jay to go to a party hosted by James Franco and full of people Jay can’t stand. But things change quick as beams of light shoot down from the sky sucking people up, leaving everybody else down on earth. The group must then ride out the apocalypse, as the world quickly goes to hell.

I’m not going to lie, it is impossible for me to be impartial for this review. I LOVE this movie immensely! I’ve seen it 9 times and counting. So if that makes you doubt my opinion then I will understand if you read somebody else’s review instead.

This film is nothing short of incredible. Each actor plays an over the top, caricature of their public personas. The result is absolutely hilarious. The actors have all been in several films with each other before, therefore there is a lot of great chemistry in the film, and this then in turn gives it a sense of heart and genuine enjoyment.

A large amount of the scenes in this film were improvised and I’m glad of it. This gives the film a more natural vibe, and it only helps that all of these actors have great comedic skills. The film is so endlessly quotable and lends itself to repeat viewings. If you’ve seen any other Seth Rogen films then expect that sort of humor.

At its core the film is stupid, it doesn’t provoke any meaningful thoughts. So if that’s what you’re expecting then you will be thoroughly let down. If you just want a fun movie that will make you laugh hysterically then this is the film for you.

Score: 9.5/10
